Now open to the public, Martin Family Legacy Garden, Canada’s first dementia-inclusive park, officially opened Monday, coinciding with World
Alzheimer’s Day. The park is made possible by Rotary Clubs: Calgary West, Calgary North, Calgary Centennial, and of course our own Calgary Olympic. The grand opening was last Monday afternoon with Melissa amongst the attendees.

Based on medical research, the $5 million four-acre green space provides a therapeutic, stigma-free sanctuary designed to reduce societal barriers and enhance the quality of life for individuals living with dementia, their families, and caregivers. Features include: way-finding markers and enhanced signage and handrails; smooth, flat, and wide circular pathways without dead ends; sensory gardens. The design is centered on a grounding gazebo, shaded seating structures, and a children’s playground equipped with multi-generational features like partner swings to accommodate family caregivers. Benches are available for dedication. With a donation, a personalized plaque in honour of a loved one in the park can be placed within the reflective walking loop area.
